MADRID - Martin Odegaard kept the Madrid media waiting.
The young attacking midfielder was over an hour late for his official unveiling
after undergoing medical examinations and taking a tour of the club's training
ground on Thursday but, when he finally arrived, he made his mark.
The 16-year-old signed from Norwegian side Stromsgodset on Wednesday night, the culmination of a whistle-stop tour around Europe's elite clubs in December to train with Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Madrid.
Barcelona was also interested right until the end and Lionel Messi is one of the youngster's football idols but he chose to move to Madrid.
Even though Los Blancos have ruined many a teenage dream in recent years, with players like Sergio Canales and Pedro Leon falling by the wayside after arriving amid much fanfare at a young age, Odegaard's mature debut in front of the local press pack hit all the right notes on Thursday.
Why Madrid and not Barcelona? "This is the best place for me to develop." Do you prefer Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? "Right now, Ronaldo. He is the best player in the world." How soon do you expect to be playing for the first team? "That's not important. If Carlo Ancelotti wants to use me, I'll be delighted but I'll also be delighted to play for the second team." What did Cristiano and Ancelotti say to him? "That will stay between us."
Tricky questions were met with a maturity and a composure that belied the midfielder's tender age and, if he can be as composed on the ball in the famous white kit, he looks like being a success at Real Madrid. congrats to him and this might just be a big plus to real madrid.
